How to Get Band 7+ in IELTS Speaking
Practical strategies to lift your IELTS Speaking score, designed for learners in Graz, Austria, and across Europe.
What does a Band 7+ really mean?
If you’re preparing for IELTS in Graz or anywhere in Austria, you’ve probably asked: “What do I actually need to do to get Band 7 or higher?”
A Band 7+ means you are:
- Fluent (even if not perfect)
- Able to speak at length
- Using a range of vocabulary and grammar
- Easy to understand
Important
It does not mean perfect English.
1. Stop overthinking — start speaking
One of the biggest problems we see in IELTS students is thinking too much before speaking. Long pauses lower your fluency score.
Better strategy
- Answer immediately
- Keep sentences simple and clear
- Extend your answer with examples
2. Extend your answers naturally
Short answers = lower scores.
Instead of:
“Yes, I like travelling.”
Say:
“Yes, I really enjoy travelling, especially to places with different cultures because I like trying new food and meeting new people.”
3. Use flexible, natural language
To reach Band 7+, you need more than basic phrases. Instead of repeating simple words:
- “very good” → “really effective” / “extremely useful”
- “big” → “massive” / “significant”
4. Show range (but don’t force it)
Examiners are looking for:
- Different sentence types
- Natural connectors
- Clear organisation
But don’t memorise complicated phrases — it often sounds unnatural.
5. Practise speaking under real conditions
The best preparation is:
- Timed speaking practice
- Answering unfamiliar questions
- Getting real feedback
Final Tip
Remember
If you want Band 7+, focus on: fluency first, clarity second, complexity third.
